Warning Labels for Alcohol
Share

If cigarettes came out today, we’d never legalise them.
If alcohol came out today… we’d market it as “self-care,” put it in a cute bottle, and sell it next to candles.
But here’s the part that no one talks about:
- Alcohol causes around 3 million deaths globally every year.
- It’s linked to over 200 health conditions
- It’s a Group 1 carcinogen—the highest risk group, placing it in the same category as asbestos, radiation, and tobacco.
And yet…
Cigarettes come with graphic warning labels showing you exactly how they can kill you.
Alcohol?
Aesthetic label. Gold foil. Maybe a cheeky “drink responsibly” in size 6 font like it’s a legal afterthought.
No mention of cancer.
No mention of liver failure.
No mention of what withdrawal actually feels like.
No mention of the mental health spiral, the trauma loops, the slow erosion of your life.
No mention of addiction.
Why?
Because alcohol is socially protected, politically convenient, culturally encouraged, and economically profitable.
Because it’s easier to label people as the problem than the product.
Because “you lack willpower” sells better than “this substance is addictive and harmful.”
But here’s the truth:
If people had to look at a label that said
⚠️ “Alcohol increases your risk of cancer”
⚠️ “Alcohol can cause dependence”
⚠️ “Alcohol contributes to depression, anxiety, and suicide”
⚠️ “Alcohol causes extensive health issues including; liver disease (fatty liver and cirrhosis), heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, weakened immunity, and digestive issues……
…before every drink?
We’d be having a very different conversation.
This isn’t about prohibition.
This is about informed consent.
You deserve to know what you’re consuming.
You deserve transparency.
You deserve better than marketing disguised as culture.
We put warnings on cigarettes because the evidence demanded it.
The evidence for alcohol is already here.
We’re just choosing not to look at it.
